You Focus on What Matters Most — We Handle the Writing, Editing & Citing
The Paper Digest AI academic writing assistant is a text generator, citation generator, and rephrasing tool in one editor: write, edit, cite, and get answers in one place, sentence by sentence.
It helps write essays, research papers, project reports, literature reviews, grant proposals, blog posts, letters, emails, and personal statements, and serves users from thousands of universities, companies, and government agencies every day.
Real Citations. Private Drafts.
Citations found per sentence
Click a sentence, press Add Citations, and the most relevant papers for that exact sentence are suggested — drawn from real published research papers indexed by Paper Digest, each linked to its source. You select what to keep; nothing is inserted without your approval.
Your draft stays with you
Drafts are not stored on Paper Digest servers: the document lives in your editor, and saving writes a .json file to your own computer. Your unpublished work stays with you until you choose to share it.
A bibliography that exports right
References are collected as you write and travel with the document: export LaTeX with the bibliography as a ready BibTeX file, or Word with the reference list included.
How the AI Academic Writer Works
-
1
Start your way at www.paperdigest.org/writer — a blank page with your title, an AI-generated outline, a short or long draft on your topic, or a draft from your own instructions. You can also paste your text or open a PDF, TXT, or previously saved document.
-
2
Write sentence by sentence: click any sentence, then Rephrase (academic style, grammar fixed), Continue Writing (complete the sentence or write the next one), or Add Citations. Each suggestion appears beside your original — accept it, try again for alternatives, or reject it.
-
3
Ask without leaving the editor: Ask Anything answers from common knowledge, the scientific literature (with references), or your current document — explain a concept or question your own draft right beside the text.
-
4
Export and keep — privately: LaTeX (.tex with a BibTeX bibliography) or Word (.docx), or save as .json to your own computer and reload later, references intact. Drafts are never stored on our servers.
Built for Research Writing
You stay in control
Every AI suggestion is previewed side by side with your text before anything changes — accept, browse up to five alternatives, or reject. Full undo and redo, and a stop button for any running request.
Write in 12 languages
Arabic, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), English, French, German, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Vietnamese — or let the language be detected automatically.
Formulas, tables & structure
LaTeX-style formulas, tables, section headings, and lists — carried through to your LaTeX and Word exports, not lost on the way out.
Ask with the right source
Each question in Ask Anything can draw on common knowledge, the scientific literature (answers include references), or your current document — in the output language you choose.
A reference list you manage
The References panel sits under the editor: every accepted citation lands there, and removing one cleans it out of the text too.
A comfortable editor
Dark mode for long sessions, fullscreen for focus, and print straight from the editor — references included.
One Toolkit, from First Survey to Final Draft
Survey the field first
Run an AI literature review on your topic to see the key papers and findings before you outline — then write with the field in view.
Read what you cite
Open any paper in the AI academic reader and question it side by side with the PDF — so the papers you cite are papers you understand.
Go beyond papers
Generate an AI research report grounded in papers, patents, grants, clinical trials, and other credible sources when the question is bigger than one literature.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the suggested citations real?
Yes. Citation suggestions come from real published research papers indexed by Paper Digest, and every suggestion links to its source so you can check it yourself. You select the citations you want; nothing is inserted without your approval.
Can it write a whole draft for me?
It can start one: choose an AI-generated outline, a short draft, or a long draft on your topic — or describe what you want to write. From there the editor is built for co-writing: you refine the text sentence by sentence with Rephrase, Continue Writing, and Add Citations.
What kinds of documents can I write?
Essays, research papers, project reports, literature reviews, grant proposals, blog posts, letters, emails, and personal statements — written in the academic style by default.
How does Add Citations work?
Click a sentence and press Add Citations: the most relevant papers for that sentence are suggested, each linked to its source. Select the ones you want — they are inserted in-text and collected in your reference list. Removing a citation from the list removes it from the text as well.
Can I export to LaTeX or Word?
Yes. Export LaTeX (.tex) with your references included as a ready BibTeX bibliography, or Word (.docx) — and print straight from the editor. Saving as .json stores the document on your own computer, so you can reload it later and keep editing, references intact.
Is my draft stored on your servers?
No. Paper Digest does not store your drafts — the document lives in your editor, and saving writes a .json file to your own computer. Your unpublished work stays with you.
Can I start from my own draft?
Yes — paste your text into the editor, or open a PDF or TXT file. A document saved as .json reloads exactly as you left it, references included.
Which languages are supported?
Write in Arabic, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), English, French, German, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, or Vietnamese — or let the language be detected automatically.
Can it answer questions while I write?
Yes. Open Ask Anything — it picks up any text you have selected — and choose the source for the answer: common knowledge, the scientific literature (answers include references), or your current document.
Is it free? Do I need an account?
You can try it for free without signing up, under a daily quota. Sign in with a Paper Digest account to continue beyond the daily limit.
